Voters in Pelham will select their first new mayor in more than a dozen years on Tuesday and both names on the ballot are already familiar.

Tuesday, Aug. 26 is election day in Pelham and throughout the Birmingham area.

Two city council members, Maurice Mercer and Rick Wash, are stepping away from the dais in campaigns to claim the mayor’s seat to lead the Shelby County suburb of about 25,000 people. One of the candidates will replace Mayor Gary Waters, who is not seeking a fourth term.

Mercer is currently the city council president. He announced his intention to run exactly a year before election day.

On his campaign website, Mercer said he wanted to help support the city’s growth.
