WINONA, Miss. (WJTV) - Winona Mayor Jerry Flowers spoke to WJTV 12 News about the city's efforts to improve water quality.

For decades, residents in the city have dealt with water issues, including high iron content and inconsistent quality. Flowers said the problem dates back nearly 40 years when shallow wells were first drilled.

"For 40 years, we've had iron content with the water, you know, with building the water plant and doing all that. Forty years ago, you had debt where to get the debt paid off in order to do something new," the mayor said.

He said the city began addressing the issue about 10 years ago, and major progress was made four years ago with the drilling of a deeper well and construction of a new water tower.
