A major bombshell rocked U.S. politics on Friday, August 22 when the news broke that the FBI was searching the Bethesda, Maryland home of former National Security Adviser John Bolton, who served in the first Trump Administration but is now on very bad terms with President Donald Trump. While the search was being conducted, Michael Cohen — Trump's former personal attorney and fixer — predicted that Bolton will face some type of indictment because of the president's thirst for revenge and retribution.

The following day, MSNBC's Ali Velshi warned that Bolton is only one of the many targets of Trump's "revenge presidency." And he discussed Trump's retaliation agenda with two Never Trumpers: The Contrarian's Jennifer Rubin (a former Washington Post columnist) and The Atlantic's Tom Nichols.

"How many things are wrong with this investigation?," Rubin told Velshi and Nichols. "And I put it in quotes because we don't know if there really is an investigation or there's just a raid. First of all, the president of the United States, the vice president, the FBI shouldn't be commenting on anything. What happened to the policy that we don't comment on investigations? Secondly, as we have said, John Bolton is on an enemies list; the president said he wasn't a fan. They maliciously took away his security detail. They revoked his security clearance. Gosh, does it seem like he's being singled out? I would think so."

Rubin argued that the Trump Administration is so out of control that judges must demand a "much higher level of proof before they sign off on warrants" or "accept indictments."

The former Washington Post columnist warned that Trump and his allies are not only abusing the criminal justice system to target opponents — they are jeopardizing the United States' national security at the same time.

Rubin told Velshi and Nichols, "When you have yes-men and yes-women who are completely incompetent in positions of high authority, that leaves us vulnerable. You couldn't have done more to destroy our national security infrastructure…. (Trump) is leaving us a sitting duck because he doesn't care about America."

Rubin got no argument from Nichols, who compared Trump's second administration to the Soviet Communist Party.

Nichols told Rubin and Velshi, "This is like the Soviet Union in the 1950s. You've run afoul of the party, comrade…. Even though they come across as clowns, they're clowns with flamethrowers."
