Malachi Toney should be in Plantation, preparing to face St. Joseph’s Prep with the rest of his American Heritage teammates as they prepare to kick off the high school football season on Friday night.

Instead, the freshman wide receiver, who reclassified from the 2026 recruiting class to the 2025 class so he could enroll at UM in the spring, is trying to seize the starting slot wide receiver role.

“Special talent, special work ethic, special DNA,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said on WQAM’s “The Joe Rose Show” on Tuesday. “That’s that’s the best way to put it. And (he is) just getting started.”
