BEAUMONT, Texas — Saturday, the Southeast Texas Humane Society broke its own adoption record by placing 28 dogs and cats into homes during their 'Clear the Shelters' event. An adoption campaign aimed at reducing overcrowding in local animal facilities.

The nationwide initiative has already shown success in Southeast Texas, with 150 animals adopted during the first three weeks.

Last year the Humane society saw record numbers with 20 animals adopted at the event. This year they were more ambitious.

"We're looking to do 21 this year, hence the $21 adoptions," Shelter Director Taylor Westphal told 12News Wednesday.

It's safe to say this years turnout surpassed even those ambitions.

Westphal tells 12News that as of today, a third of the shelter is now clear.
