This week I’m raising my glass to thank and honor the Santa Ynez Valley News on its 100 years of spreading the word and sights of the Valley.

Or, as the Chamber of Commerce put it, “a century of trusted local journalism and community storytelling!”

Rideau Winery on Alamo Pintado Road hosted the chamber’s August mixer. We enjoyed a splendid red and a buttery white from their cellar.

Highlight for me and many other Valley News “alums” was the recognition of the paper’s legacy and contributions to our community.

Kevin Merrill — son of long-time editor, the late King Merrill — and I were part of the current staff singled out for recognition. Kevin and I, both columnists have a long history. It was great seeing him after the many years where our paths crossed only in the Valley News.
