Suffer the children.

Hundreds of students at East Forsyth High School walked out of class Friday to protest deep cuts among faculty and staff in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Just as a new school year begins, scores of educators across the district will lose their jobs, thanks to Central Office administrators’ mismanagement of the district’s finances over the past several years.

The district dug a massive $46 million hole for itself through a breathtaking blend of sloppiness, negligence and incompetence.

So now it must eliminate more than 340 positions, among them exceptional children’s teachers, assistant principals and support staff. There will be pay cuts, demotions and furloughs as well.

It is not fair but it is necessary.
