Hundreds of thousands of Canadians had their summer plans disrupted by a short-term flight attendant strike at Air Canada that threatened to grind air travel in Canada to a halt.

While the union representing Air Canada’s flight attendants and the airline appear to have reached a deal to avert a long-term strike that would have impacted even more travellers, it’s worth talking about why a labour dispute at just one of Canada’s airlines threatened the travel plans of potentially millions of Canadians. The reason is that domestic travel in Canada is dominated by just two airlines. In fact, 52 per cent of all flights going in and out of Pearson Airport, Canada’s busiest, are Air Canada flights alone.
