UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A 61-year-old inmate at the Union County Detention Center died early Saturday morning while receiving medical care, the Union County Sheriff's Office said.

Officials said Gregory Faircloth became unresponsive while being examined and treated by medical staff just before 4 a.m. According to deputies, detention staff began life-saving measures, and he was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Faircloth, who had been in custody since Aug. 12, was housed in the medical unit because of "multiple pre-existing medical conditions," according to UCSO.

The sheriff asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation. Officials said no foul play is suspected.
