INDIANOLA, Iowa (KCCI) - This school year... Iowa’s Education Savings Accounts were open to every student in the state, regardless of income.
Governor Reynolds said the move is to give families more choice in education, KCCI reports .
Just about 46,000 families applied this year, and nearly all of them, almost 44,000, have been approved.
In comparison, last year, 30,000 scholarships were given.
Each account is worth just under $8,000 in per-pupil funding.
Families can use that money for private school tuition and other expenses such as textbooks or tutoring.
Tuition at Victory Christian Academy, one of two Christian schools in Indianola, is $8500 a year. Just a few hundred dollars more than what the ESA provides.
