MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings signed former North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz on Sunday.

It's expected the 10-year veteran will be the team's No. 2 quarterback behind first-time starter J.J. McCarthy.

Wentz worked out with the Vikings over the weekend as the team sought a veteran as insurance behind McCarthy. Veteran Sam Howell, the presumed No. 2, struggled during training camp and Minnesota's preseason games, as did veteran Brett Rypien.

The Vikings traded Howell to the Philadephia Eagles on Sunday to make roster space for Wentz.

That left Max Brosmer as the Vikings' second-best quarterback a week before the team's season-opener at Chicago. Brosmer is a rookie out of the University of Minnesota.
