A brush fire reported Saturday evening east of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve had scorched 5,900 acres by Sunday at roughly 10:30 a.m.

Fire crews from Bannock and Power counties and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Idaho Falls District had responded by Sunday morning to the Split Top Fire, which is burning roughly 14 miles northwest of Aberdeen, near Arco-Minidoka and Split Top roads, BLM stated in a Facebook post . The fire is burning in a large swath of federal land known as the Big Desert area.

"The Big Desert has been subject to very large wildfires in the past, and the BLM Idaho Falls fuels program has worked since 2012 to construct and maintain a network of fuel breaks along roads in the area," the agency stated. "Two of these fuel breaks are along the Arc
