MONCKS CORNER — One person died and another was injured late on Aug. 23 after a driver who was apparently attempting to evade the police barreled into an unsuspecting vehicle that was stopped at a traffic light.

The driver of a 2012 Mercedes SUV was “attempting to evade law enforcement,” while traveling Southbound on U.S. Highway 17 Alternate just after 10 p.m. on Aug. 23, according to a statement from South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

The Mercedes struck the rear, passenger side of a 2003 Infiniti SUV that was traveling in the same direction but stopped at a traffic light on Main Street in Moncks Corner, near SC-6, Ridgeway said.
