Portland police warned Saturday that they’d crack down on people who chose to participate in a Southeast Portland street takeover advertised on social media.

For 10 hours on Saturday, officers fanned out to patrol, find street racers and warn people they could have their cars taken or be cited with a misdemeanor if they facilitated a street race.

For a while, it seemed to work, the Portland Police Bureau said in a news release Sunday.

Officers found suspected street racers on Southeast Belmont Street around 5 p.m., Saturday, and after “proactive patrols,” police said, the participants drove away. In all, police pulled over 29 drivers, towed six cars, issued four citations and arrested two people — one for driving impaired and the other for unauthorized use of a vehicle.
