A weather alert was issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 7:18 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 8 p.m. for Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland and Tioga counties.
The storms could bring wind gusts of up to 40 mph and marble-sized hail (0.5 inches).
"At 7:17 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a cluster of strong thunderstorms over Erin, or 11 miles southeast of Odessa, moving northeast at 30 mph," according to the weather service. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible."
Locations impacted by the alert include Ithaca, Elmira, Newfield, Danby, Caroline, Erin, Dryden, Berkshire, Richford and Harford.
The weather service comments, "If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Heavy rain
