The sun and high temperatures over the weekend heated up Vancouver Island over the weekend, with the Victoria region breaking a nearly 100-year-old daily temperature record Saturday.

According to Environment Canada, the Victoria area saw a high of 31.1 C, breaking the last record for Aug. 23 of 30 C set way back in 1916.

Several other communities across the Island also broke daily heat records on Saturday.

The Malahat reached 31.9 C, breaking its 30.5 C record set in 1987. Both Courtenay and Comox broke their record of 30 C set in 1966, reaching 31.1 C.

Qualicum Beach reached 30.3 C, breaking its 1966 record of 27.8 C. Tofino hit a high of 28.8 C which boke its 1988 record of 28.4 C.
