PERRY COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) -- What started as a water rescue operation led to the discovery of a person who died in Perry County Sunday.

The Perry County Rescue Squad said it responded to the Buffalo River Resort after family members reported the victim became distressed while swimming and went underwater on Sunday, Aug. 24.

According to officials, personnel immediately started searching the area and found the victim near the last known location.

The rescue squad told News 2 the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time," officials wrote on social media.
