A man has died following an early morning fire at a tower block in South London. The tragic discovery was made by firefighters after flames engulfed a first floor maisonette on Oval's Dorset Road yesterday (August 24).

The man's name or age is yet to be confirmed. London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called to the 11-storey block of flats just after midnight, prompting a large emergency response.

Five fire engines carrying around 30 firefighters rushed to the residential street, near Vauxhall Park, minutes later. Crews from across Lambeth, Clapham, Peckham and Battersea battled the blaze for over an hour, declaring it under control just before 1.30am.

Part of the maisonette now lies in ruin. The cause of the fire is under investigation by LFB and the Metropolitan Police .
