From late March to early October, Cumberland County becomes home to one of nature’s most magical sky dwellers — the ruby-throated hummingbird.
After wintering in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, the tiny, iridescent creatures, known for speed and agility, make their way back to the U.S.
Ruby-throated hummers, which spend their summers here, cover the U.S. map from East Texas to the Atlantic Ocean and as far north as Minnesota and as south as Key Largo, Florida.
If you put out enough "nectar" — a sugar-to-water ratio of 4-1 — you could have dozens in your Cumberland County yard during daylight hours. And even rain, a common sight in the warm months here, doesn't stop them. A torrential downpour only seems to increase their zoomies.
