LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the last five years, Kentuckians have had to go to regional offices, operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, to get a driver’s license or ID. Long lines and headaches for drivers have been persistent issues for the state. Now, a growing number of lawmakers are calling for change.

For legislators like State Rep. Savannah Maddox, R-Dry Ridge, it’s clear the current system is flawed.

“We need to return the driver’s license program back to each individual county in the Commonwealth,” Maddox said.

It’s why she intends to file a bill next session that would put that responsibility back into the hands of circuit court clerks. Maddox believe this will make the process run smoother and increase transparency.
