CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A celebration of one of the Lowcountry’s most treasured traditions is being planned for next month.

It comes after the Kiawah Conservancy hosted a sweetgrass distribution day Sunday at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park, where local artisans were given freshly harvested sweetgrass.

The material is essential for the centuries-old practice of sweetgrass basket making, a Lowcountry art form that has been passed down through generations.

Volunteers gathered and helped share bundles of the native grass, while visitors had a chance to learn more about the history and cultural significance of the baskets.
