UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) -- The Illinois man accused of killing Omar Mitchell in April rejected a plea deal in Oneida County Court on Monday before Judge Robert Bauer.

First reported by the Rome Sentinel on Monday, August 25, 32-year-old Darius Steward rejected a plea deal of 20 years to life in state prison for the shooting death of Omar Mitchell.

Utica Police received a ShotSpotter notification on Tuesday, April 22 near the intersection of Kemble and Walker Street in the Cornhill neighborhood. When officers arrived at the scene, they spotted a vehicle -- which, it was later learned, contained Mitchell -- fleeing the scene.

Mitchell was ultimately transported to the Wynn Hospital in Utica. He eventually died from his injuries. Stewart was eventually identified by officers as the susp
