Emmerdale fans are fuming after a scene depicting "animal cruelty" on tonight's episode of the ITV soap .

John Sugden, played by Oliver Farnworth, was hunting deer in the woods with a bow and arrow. 'Disturbed' viewers watched as killer John fired a shot towards a herd of deer.

The impact wasn't shown so it's unclear whether he hit or missed any of the animals. Despite this, viewers were incensed by the programmes choice to depict animal cruelty.

The scene mirrors how John hunt down Mackenzie Boyd by shooting him in the back with an arrow in the woods, before murdering him with a large rock. Again, the camera cut away before the impact.
