The Office of Inspector General has determined that a Bridgeport police officer was justified in shooting a man who officials said charged at officers with knives in each hand last year.

Police shot Dale Stephenson, of Bridgeport, on Birdseye Street just after 6 a.m., on May 16, 2024, according to officials . He was seriously wounded in the shooting, but he survived.

The Office of Inspector General report says officers responded to reports that a man was acting erratically, knocking on doors and waving two large knives that looked like butcher knives in the air and he ran at officers Israel Colon and Darryl Wilson Jr. when they arrived at the scene.

Officer Colon shouted, “Don’t do it,” at Stevenson three times,
