BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH) is beginning a weeklong observance of International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) starting Monday, Aug. 25.

The official International Overdose Awareness Day is Aug. 31.

According to the JCDH, IOAD is a global campaign held annually to raise awareness about overdose, remember those who have been lost and promote evidence-based strategies to prevent further tragedies.

As part of the observance, JCDH has placed purple flags in front of the front lawn of the JCDH Health Center located at 1400 6th Avenue South in Birmingham.
