HOMEWOOD, Ala. ( WBRC ) - For two years, Homewood leaders and developers have wrestled with plans to revitalize the long-standing Piggly Wiggly grocery store.
City officials say the project, often referred to simply as “the pig project,” is finally on the verge of breaking ground.
During Monday night’s city council meeting, members voted 9-0 to approve a revised package of tax incentives that could clear the way for construction. The council had initially committed $3.5 million in incentives, but with developers scaling back both the scope and cost of the project, that figure has now been reduced to $3 million.
Homewood City Council President Walter Jones said the changes were a step in the right direction and that the community should not have to wait much longer to see progress.
