Southwest Airlines, based in Dallas Love Field, is changing its long-standing policies for plus-sized passengers starting Jan. 27, 2026.
This date coincides with Southwest’s introduction of assigned seating on all flights.
The big picture: Under the new rules, passengers who “encroach upon neighboring seat(s)” must purchase the necessary number of seats ahead of their trip to ensure they have the adjoining seats. • Previously, plus-sized passengers could book an extra seat and request a refund afterward, or ask for an extra seat at the gate if available without additional charges. • Southwest will now implement stricter refund conditions for extra seats: The flight must have at least one open seat or space available passes occupied. Both seats must be bought under the same fare class
