TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry said it is taking action to reduce violence and increase safety and security in state prisons.

This comes after recent acts of violence in Arizona state prisons.

In April 2025, inmate Ricky Wassenaar killed three other inmates at the state prison on Wilmot Road.

Prison reform leaders called for change then and are still saying more needs to be done.

“The goal is to decrease murders, violence, and safety – none of that addresses it,” said Carlos Garcia, the Executive Director of the Arizona Correctional Peace Officers Association.
