Automated speed cameras in Belleville will continue to nab speeders across the city after council Monday nixed an attempt by Coun. Kelly Henderson at their eventual removal.

A motion by Henderson requesting city staff take steps to abolish automated speed cameras except in school zones was handily defeated by opposing councillors.

Council voted 5-3 against removing the cameras.

In a surprise move, Mayor Neil Ellis voted in step with Henderson as did Coun. Lisa Anne Chatten to remove the cameras.

Voting to maintain the traffic-calming devices were Coun(s). Paul Carr, Kathryn Brown, Garnet Thompson, Sean Kelly, and Barb Enright-Miller.
