At least three people were injured after a home exploded north of St Louis, Missouri, on Monday, August 25, officials said.

An explosion in north St. Louis County, Missouri injured at least three people and destroyed five homes on Monday, Aug. 25, according to local officials.

Video shows the aftermath of the explosion, with smoke rising from the homes waylaid by the blast, which officials said occurred around 9:15 a.m. local time.

Black Jack Fire Chief Paul Peebles said at a news conference that over 20 homes were damaged, including condos in the area. Peebles added that cadaver dogs deployed to the scene did not find any hits, and that 90% of the homes in the area were red-tagged, meaning that residents are prohibited from entering them due to damage.

"It's like a bomb hit that place," St. Louis County Police Chief Col. Kenneth Gregory told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Officials at the press conference said that the cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Jason Merrill, the public information officer for gas company Spire, said that the utility's crews did not find "any issues with our natural gas infrastructure."

Residents describe St. Louis explosion

Tyreke Abernathy told St. Louis NBC affiliate KSDK that he was jolted out of bed by the explosion that damaged his home.

"I was just lying down in my bed, and as soon as I heard it and felt it, I got up and I ran over there," he said. "I saw one house that was already crumbled, and the next two that were next to it, they caught fire."

Erika Phillips told the Post-Dispatch that she was asleep in bed next to her 1-year-old son when the explosion occurred. She told the paper that her condo shook and a painting above the bed fell on her son's face.

"It was like an earthquake," Phillips said.
