SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Republicans filed an emergency petition with the state Supreme Court on Monday, alleging the state’s latest redistricting effort is unconstitutional.
The 432-page filing argues that recently approved redistricting legislation bypasses the required 30-day public review period and undermines the voter-approved system of independent redistricting. That process, set in place by a 2008 constitutional amendment, put a bipartisan citizens commission in charge of drawing congressional maps every 10 years.
“As long as I have breath in my body, I'm going to fight every step of the way...,” said State Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Huntington Beach. “Every loophole that they do, every Constitutional measure they break, we're going to challenge them in court.”
