MEMPHIS, Tenn. — After two hours of debating about where to build a new Shelby County jail, county commissioners decided Monday they needed more information and more time before choosing a location.

The proposed location in the New Chicago area of North Memphis is getting pushback from people who live there.

"I've seen politics at its best in this meeting today, you playing with people's lives when you're talking about New Chicago," said Dr. Carnita Atwater, executive director of the New Chicago Community Partnership.

Atwater was upset after what she calls a confusing meeting Monday at the Shelby County Commission.

Atwater spoke in opposition to relocating the Walter Bailey Jr. Criminal Justice Center from 201 Poplar to the old Firestone plant site in North Memphis.
