FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Former Fresno State President Dr. Joseph Castro died at the age of 58.

His career-long message: be bold.

“I pledge to make sure the legacy of our university is secure,” Castro told his first student assembly in 2013.

Now, he leaves behind his own legacy.

He died Sunday after battling cancer.

“President Castro's legacy is one of service, is one of inspiration, and it's one of really being a beacon of hope,” Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez said.

Castro was Fresno State’s first Latino president and the California State University system’s first Latino chancellor.

Chavez says they worked together closely.

“He made Fresno and the Central Valley believe in themselves when they did not necessarily believe in our city and our valley,” Chavez said.
