PROVO, Utah (ABC4 Sports) - The day Bear Bachmeier was named the starting quarterback at BYU is a day he will ever forget.
"Yeah, it was thrilling," Bachmeier said Monday. "It was a great moment. It's an incredible honor to represent such a profound university, and obviously being on the football team, it's an incredible honor."
Bachmeier will become the first true freshman in BYU history to start the season opener at quarterback when he takes the field Saturday against Portland State.
Bachmeier wasn't at BYU in the spring, but still learned the entire playbook. So what are Kalani Sitake's expecations for Bachmeier in his first college game this Saturday?
"Just do what he's been doing all camp," said head coach Kalani Sitake. "Just lead the offense. He's done a great job being the lead
