The owner of an outdoor clothing and equipment shop just off the Santa Fe Plaza says he plans to close his business after four years because of what he describes as concerns over crime in the downtown area and the impact tariffs have had on his sales.
Nick Salazar, the owner of Santa Fe Trail Outfitters, said he is closing his business at 110 W. San Francisco St. at the end of August. He said his sales are down about 30% from the same point last year, adding he no longer feels like it is safe for him to operate a business downtown.
That is a message he is hearing from more and more tourists, as well, he said.
“I’m hearing from folks who are used to visiting Santa Fe often that they don’t feel safe coming here, going out for dinner on the Plaza after dark,” he said.
