Some Indianapolis City-County Council members are trying to strike down a nearly 50-year precedent that requires most city employees to live in Marion County. But top city leaders are pushing back on the idea as a potential drain to Indy's tax base and a detriment to civic accountability.
Republican Councilor Michael-Paul Hart is proposing to let nearly all city-county employees live in whatever Indiana county they choose, so long as they can readily commute to Indianapolis. Hart says the change would expand the city's talent pool amid perennial staffing struggles, attracting and retaining strong applicants who want to live in a suburban county for what they see as a better quality of life and better schools.
