Grimsley hung on to win the state’s premiere week one matchup, while Northern Guilford rallied to win the most prominent matchup between two Triad teams.
1. Grimsley (1-0) Last Week: No. 1 The Whirlies only had one penalty for 10 yards. But they also didn’t score off any of their defense’s four forced fumbles and allowed a tying touchdown drive at the end of regulation. Still, Grimsley hung on to defeat West Charlotte, one of the top 8A teams in the state, 28-27, in overtime after getting a stop on the Lions’ “go for the win” two-point conversion try. Next: at West Forsyth.
2. Northern Guilford (1-0)
Last Week: No. 2 The Nighthawks were down 38-29 to Reidsville entering the fourth quarter but came back thanks to a two-score swing in which they recovered an onside kick
