CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - As students return to school one bus driver has a warning for everybody behind the wheel.

Jeff Schmatt is a driver with the Mount Vernon Community School District, he picked up the position three years ago to help fill a need in the community. Schmatt says the most stressful part of his day is when he has to watch students cross the road while unsure if drivers will come to a stop.

“It’s always a guessing game,” Schmatt said. “You’re trying to watch the kid, make sure they’re not running to toward the bus and then you have to worry about oncoming traffic.”

When bus lights are flashing red or amber, that means it will be stopping -- drivers must stop for school buses regardless of what side of the road they’re on. Passing a school bus while it is stopped or
