Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook said she wasn't going anywhere after Donald Trump "fired" her for cause over social media on Monday. Trump cited a criminal referral against Cook from attorney Bill Pulte as cause enough to remove Cook from her position.
Trump's firing is dubious, since the Federal Reserve is a private bank and the authority of the president remove their senior officials calls into question its independence, free of political influence.
"President Trump purported to fire me 'for cause' when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so," Cook said in a statement. "I will not resign. I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022."
