A Utah judge has struck down the state’s Republican-drawn congressional maps and ordered the Legislature to redraw boundaries before the 2026 midterm elections, dealing a major blow to GOP lawmakers and a victory for anti-gerrymandering advocates.

Judge Dianna Gibson ruled on Monday that the 2021 redistricting plan violated a 2018 ballot initiative that established an independent commission to curb partisan influence in the process. In her 79-page decision, she wrote that lawmakers had “intentionally stripped away” the commission’s core standards and procedures, undermining Utah voters’ constitutional authority to reform their government.
