JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - More than two years after taking the top job, interim Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade is retiring.

The 29-year Jackson Police Department veteran made the announcement at the Jackson City Council meeting on Tuesday.

“I would rather leave prematurely than overstay my welcome,” he said. “The average tenure of a chief in this country is two and a half years. That’s per the FBI data. So, I’m about three months away from y’all kicking me out.”

Wade is going to be director of security at Methodist Rehabilitation Services. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones will be filling in as chief on an interim basis.

Jones, who will remain on as sheriff, says he will be in the position for 60 days until a new chief is selected.
