A semi-truck carrying about 30 head of cattle caught fire Sunday night along Interstate 8, prompting road closures and significant traffic hazards in both directions near Roll, east of Yuma.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred around 8:13 p.m. on westbound I-8 at milepost 51, near Avenue 49E.

The fire, which began in the tires, spread to the rear of the truck and the front portion of the trailer. The driver reported tire failure just before the fire broke out.

The truck pulled onto the right emergency shoulder, and the cattle were released for safety. However, the animals wandered onto both westbound and eastbound lanes, leading to road hazards.

A pickup truck struck one of the cows on the eastbound side of I-8.

Two of the cows sustained injurie
