CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — In cities, small towns and on hill farms across the Mountain State, dogs aren’t just pets. They comfort children in schools, move livestock, help hunters, deter wildlife on airport runways and serve alongside first responders. Here’s a look at the roles they play — and a few famous West Virginia dogs along the way.
Companions and therapy dogs
Therapy dogs have become familiar faces in West Virginia schools. The first lady’s Friends With Paws initiative launched in April 2022, placing certified therapy dogs where students face the steepest challenges. By late 2024, the program had placed more than 30 dogs statewide, and officials say the animals help calm anxious students, improve mood and break down social barriers.
