MADISON (WKOW) -- A new report released on Tuesday from the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) said about 6 million gallons of wastewater spilled into the environment.
A now-completed MMSD analysis indicates that the overflow likely began on August 13 when a crack formed in a large sewer pipe that runs through an MMSD-owned wetland on the Nine Springs Wastewater Plant's property.
MMSD first became aware of and reported the issue on August 22 when someone using the nearby Capital Springs State Trail alerted MMSD staff about water bubbling in the wetland.
The trail was closed while a temporary repair was installed. It reopened in the evening hours of August 23.
