MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE)– The Rhode Island Department of Health has recommended temporarily closing the Third Beach and Peabody Beach swimming areas in Middletown.

That closure, the department says, is due to high levels of bacteria in the swimming areas at each beach.

Additionally, RIDOH is recommending reopening the swimming area at the Spouting Rock Beach Association in Newport, as bacteria counts have returned to safe levels there.

RIDOH monitors bacteria counts in bodies of water through Labor Day.

A full list of closed beaches can be found here.
