WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Watertown YMCA leaders are celebrating the success of the downtown location. The nearly $30 million project is one of the most expensive rehabs in downtown in quite some time.

“It’s never really been about the building. It’s been about building community and providing services and programs that enhance our community health, and we were really trapped in that old building where we just couldn’t expand,” said Shawna Cutuli, CEO, Watertown Family YMCA.

She calls the new downtown YMCA, which opened almost 2 years ago, a success.

The project got partial funding with a $9 million grant from the Department of Defense, and community donations and loans. To get the facility open, the YMCA was responsible for the remaining $7 million. Cutuli says the community is supp
