ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Georgia State Capitol, one of the few working capitols in the U.S. that still houses all top state offices, is in the middle of a nearly $400 million renovation aimed at preserving its history while preparing it for the future.
The 141-year-old building is undergoing structural repairs, fire safety upgrades, and new HVAC systems. Crews are also restoring historic details that reflect the building’s legacy.
“In the House chambers, you can still see remnants of the original rug and exposed floorboards from the 1880s,” said Gerald Pilgrim with the Georgia Building Authority. “This is one of the oldest working Capitols in the country.
