PORTLAND, Maine — Construction work on Portland's Congress Square intersection is set to begin Sept. 15.

The project will include new pavement, sidewalk, and ADA upgrades, updated traffic signal infrastructure, and improvements to lighting and landscaping at the busy downtown intersection, according to the City of Portland.

Traffic delays are expected during construction. Congress Street will operate one lane in each direction, while High Street will have two lanes approaching the square and one lane leaving. Exceptions to this may occur during milling and paving.

The city awarded the contract to Coastal Road Repair, which has until July 30, 2026, to complete the work. Construction will pause for the winter from Nov. 30 to April 14, 2026.
