CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - A Great Hammerhead Shark was found washed up on the sand in Carolina Beach.
A spokesperson with the NC Department of Environmental Quality’s Marine Fisheries division told WECT that town officials contacted the division’s Wilmington Office about the shark.
“Biologists collected information and took DNA samples on the shark before it was disposed of,” the spokesperson said. “It was a female Greater hammerhead found off Sand Dollar Lane in Carolina Beach.”
According to the Shark Research Institute , the great hammerhead shark is the largest of the hammerhead shark species.
The spokesperson says the shark measured 9 feet, 4 inches from its snout to the point where the tail forked, and 12 feet, 2.5 inches from its snout to the tip of its compressed tail. It
