OMAHA, Neb. —
Today marks five years since Lincoln police officer Mario Herrera was shot in the line of duty .
He died from his injuries 12 days later.
Herrera was shot while trying to apprehend murder suspect Felipe Vazquez in central Lincoln.
Previous coverage:
Vazquez was later sentenced to 75 years to life in prison.
Earlier this year, the Lincoln Police Department honored Herrera on Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Lincoln police said they will always honor Herrera's service and sacrifice.
Herrera was 50 years old.
